Seit den berühmten Weihnachtsliedern op. 8 von Peter Cornelius (Schott ED 610) und den beiden Weihnachtsliedern von Edward Grieg (Schott ED 09960) hat die Weihnachtsthematik auch Eingang in das Kunstlied gefunden. Der Kölner Komponist und Kirchenmusiker Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) setzt diese Tradition fort und vertonte zwei Texte aus der Advents- und Weihnachtszeit: "Rosen und Schlehen im Advent" von Johannes Kirschweng sowie das Gedicht "Weihnachten" von Eduard Mörike.
