I was inspired to write YOU'RE COMING HOME when I heard about the story of the Lost Children of Tuam whose remains were buried in an unmarked field in a subterranean septic tank in Galway, Ireland. There was a tragic time in Ireland when being an unmarried mother went unforgiven, and many pregnant women were sent to special homes where they would continue their pregnancy in secret and behind high walls. However neither the experience nor the end result was always a happy one. Some of these women went through the worst of trials and loss, and the song tries to reflect the genuine love and hope that the mother had towards her child, waiting for that one cherished moment to hold them close, knowing that their child would be adopted if they were to survive at all. The unmarried pregnant women experienced rejection at local and national level, but that rejection did not extend to the special bond between mother and child.

The lyrics to YOU'RE COMING HOME uses the metaphor of a ship coming into berth, into a safe harbour, and how the child brings treasures of gold as he or she comes ashore. The mother is captivated into singing this love song to her baby out of pure unconditional love.

The piano accompaniment is an intrinsic part of the song representing the movement and dynamic of this unique love story, and therefore holds an independent charm and purpose all on its own. The gentle broken chords in the right hand provides this contrasting ripple effect against the vocalist's tender cry to her child. Ultimately this song is a lullaby about waiting. Good things come to those who wait.
