In Yin Yang Serenade this can be found in the musical opposites, legato-staccato and minor-major, creating an work with great atmospheric contrast.
De Chinese begrippen yin en yang vertegenwoordigen de twee tegenovergestelde principes van een voorwerp of verschijnsel, zoals dag en nacht, licht en donker, man en vrouw, enz. La philosophie chinoise est dominée par les notions de Yin et de Yang, deux principes naturels opposés et complémentaires qui déterminent tout individu, toute chose et tout phénomène. Le Yin et le Yang sont le masculin et le féminin, le jour et la nuit, l’obscurité et la lumière, etc. Dans Yin Yang Serenade, Jacob de Haan applique cette conception la musique en opposant le jeu en legato au jeu en staccato, la tonalité mineure la tonalité Majeure, etc., donnant ainsi naissance des contrastes éthérés et fluides.
