On November 18, 1933, “Roberta” was introduced to a New Amsterdam Theater audience, and later became a Broadway musical which enjoyed a successful run of 295 performances. The singer who first introduced "Yesterdays" to the public during the musical, in her role as Aunt Minnie, was Fay Templeton (1865 - 1939) - an actress who was short with a deep, seductive voice, an abrupt manner, and feisty personality.
The story for the musical was based on Alice Duer Miller’s novel, Gowns by Roberta, which told the story of a college football player who inherits a dress shop in Paris. Along with “Yesterdays” the score included such notable songs as “I’ll Be Hard to Handle,” “Let’s Begin,” and “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.” The Herald Tribune reported that there was a “sudden outburst of public whistling, humming, and crooning of its score.”
This arrangement is based on the English guitarist John Duarte and includes guitar tablature, new editing, and the included melody with lyrics. Performance directions are given to make the arrangement as easy as possible to learn.
