The poems to which this music is set are contemporary expressions of faith. They move from the intensely personal to an urgent contemporary political challenge.
"Three Things" is an expression of inner optimism, refusing to succumb to the negativity which pain induces. It is warm and gently draws the listener into the hope it proclaims.
"Sweet Discoveries" looks backwards to past relationships. An elderly person will relive their lives in their minds alongside those who are patient enough to listen and remember with them. Understanding old age is an urgent contemporary need. This poem identifies the importance of keeping memories and, through them, relationships alive.
The longest of the three works, "Within The Garden Stands A Tree" recalls the Christian myth of the Tree of Life, once rejected by fallen humanity. The narrative moves beyond Eden to Calvary where life is restored through the death of Jesus. Our world is being crucified by the pollution and neglect of humanity today. If the myth of the tree of life still has resonance, it is through the commitment to the planet and our environment. It is the duty of all humanity to work for God’s reign.
These three songs are a break from much of contemporary church music, which often retreats into the esoteric or lodges itself in the banal. Here music and words, recreate the drama of contemporary faith giving both the art and its message the seriousness they merit.
