Students were studying the physics of flight in science class, and they were able to collaborate with scientists and astronauts from the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS. The collaboration included video meetings about space flight, which helped students compose songs, a script, and scenery for an original musical. Research included the history of flight in the United States, particularly the work of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Students helped compose the lyrics for Wish That I Could Fly in class, and the melodies were inspired by the words. The triplet rhythm helps create motion throughout. Perpetual motion in the piano accompaniment represents the flow and fluctuation of air currents, supporting the lyrics, which describe various ways to fly.
