Haunting, eerie, unsettling, trancelike... this is the groundbreaking track from UK synthpop duo Yaz (known as Yazoo in the UK). With hypnotic synths by Vince Clark under soulful vocals by Alison Moyet, the song transported the listener to cold, bleak winter days.
This handbell arrangement sets a mood early on with mallet strikes on foam table pads to mark time while a single singing bell rises up from the silence to drone as if in meditation, quickly broken by the entrance of the full choir at forte.
This push/pull of soothing sounds interrupted by almost-violent walls of sound continue until the calmness gains control and a trance-like repetitive pattern brings back the meditative state.
It requires two sets of bells and chimes with enough people to play both Group 1 and Group 2. Neither part may be played on its own.
