WHEN SANTA GOT STUCK UP THE CHIMNEY - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes "What a glorious piece of nonsense this is!

It tells the tale of how Santa Claus, and later in the song, Rudolph, get stuck in a chimney. And there’s no happy ending either - we leave them there, with Rudolph’s nose going blue in the cold...

My arrangement is for easy guitar quartet (or large ensemble) - two versions of Guitar One are provided.
Guitar One is an octave higher in pitch than Guitar 1A.

For a mixed ability ensemble, Guitar One (the high version) will suit the stronger player(s), and it needs proficiency up the neck; no single position quite has all the notes this piece needs, so there will either be some stretches (which is what I do) or some position changes (for a smaller or less experienced left hand). Rather than mandate just one approach, I’ve left it for you to finger it the way that works best for you.

There’s also a second Guitar One part (part 1A) that can be played entirely in the first position, so the piece can be played by a group of equal abilities. It’s important that Guitar Two doesn’t drown out the tune, because the tune is now inside the total sound, not sitting on top.
In a large ensemble, it’s quite OK to have some players on Guitar 1 and some on Guitar 1A - indeed, it will sound even more full!

For those coaching a school ensemble, there are some interesting chords and sequences that will make a good teaching point, and set in the key of C, there is an intriguing mix of sharps and flats too.

To marry up with the words, Chorus One needs a “pop” (a finger in the mouth or a tap with the side of the thumb on the guitar’s lower bout will both work). Chorus Two needs a “grunt”. Chorus Three is a repeat of Chorus One, and the final conclusion is a sneeze to blow away all that soot....

Have fun, and don’t take this piece too seriously..."
