Written in 1896, Wedding-Day at Troldhaugen is the sixth piece from Edvard Grieg’s eight set of Lyric Pieces (Op. 65) for solo piano. It was originally called "Gratulanterne kommer" ("The well-wishers are coming") but Grieg changed the name when the book was compiled in 1897. The piece was written for the 25th wedding anniversary of Grieg and his wife, Nina, with celebrations taking place at Fossli Hotel near the Vøringsfossen waterfall in June 1896.
Troldhaugen (meaning "The Hill of the Trolls") was Grieg’s villa (or summer house), built in 1885, Hardanger Mountain Range near Bergen. The name was suggested by Grieg’s wife.
The piece is in three sections: Welcoming the Guests, Reflections and Farewells. The first section is march-like (with 2-bar fragments within an overall 4-bar structure) followed by a reflective and tranquil second section before recapitulating the march-like section to form the third part. A recording, made in 1903, has Grieg himself playing the piece around crotchet/quarter-note = 160 with another recording having him play it a lot slower.
It was used in episode 2 of series 5 of the British sitcom "Man About the House".
