A 'wallpaper gig'consists of a restaurant or caféhiring a musician to add 'atmosphere' in thebackground as their diners or customers enjoy their refreshments. Musicians spend years preparing concert pieces to amaze and move audiences, but are they always appropriate in the relaxed setting of a café?
These ten pieces aim to give the performer repertoire which they can use in these situations. Each piece is written to convey emotion, but not disturb the diner. Structurally, they consist of one or two sections with long harmonic progressions. This should allow the player to repeat each section as many times as they like
without the audience noticing or becoming bored. I have included suggested structures in the scores, but these are suggestions only. This is true of the tempo markings as well. Feel free to slow the pieces down when a calmer atmosphere is required and the opposite when customers are a little livlier.
