After studying at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Semyon Panchenko (1867-1937) devoted much of his time to composition. "The Beatitudes" is a homophonic settign taken directly from his "Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom." These words of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew are set simply, using dynamic and harmonic turns to illuminate the text. In both Russian and English, this work is appropriate for general use throughout the church year.
