Wonderful newly written chamber music (2021) by a female composer, Vignettes is a delightful work for Bassoon and String Quartet. Refreshing and evocative, Vignettes creates three distinct moods as it explores solo bassoon in relationship to the texture and color of the strings. The first movement, “Hopespun” is joyous and accessible, celebrating a dotted note pattern both dancelike and carefree. The second movement, “Somewhere, Tears” is lyrical and reflective, characterized by a poignant descending melody that moves throughout the ensemble. “Infinite Imagines,” the third movement, is playful and imaginative, with a curious pizzicato theme that weaves its way through a series of short whole-tone scale patterns that are interrupted by comedic melodic bursts from the bassoon. Vignettes is a marvelous concert or competition piece, sure to please both performers and audience alike.
