Das Thema, das Weber als Grundlage zu den vorliegenden Variationen (Kompositionsjahr: 1804) diente, stammt aus der Oper Samori des Abbé Vogler, bei dem er in Wien von 1803 bis 1804 Schüler war. Die Variationen op. 6 entstanden offenbar auf die Veranlassung Voglers hin. Ursprünglich plante Weber noch Variationen zu 5 weiteren Themen aus der Oper, die Vogler schließlich aber selbst schrieb. Die vorliegende praktische Ausgabe folgt dem Text der Weber-Gesamtausgabe.
