Carl Strommen has crafted a clever set of variations on the well-known sailing song. There is ample opportunity for all the sections to shine and many contrasts in style and harmonic variations to keep the player and the audience intrigued. A true concert work for young string groups. Bravo!.
Variations on a Sailing Songxa0is a vigorous, lively sea chantey that should be played with gusto and enthusiasm. Contrasting this description are mm. 15 through 30 and mm. 41 through 44, which should be played broadly (legato) in a song-like manner. The piano part, although not essential, will provide harmonic and rhythmic interest that will add that extra spice to this arrangement.
