Gerhardt, a Lutheran hymnist, to Firese's "O Welt, Sieh Hier" (O world, see here) and transformed it into this 18th Century hymn. It deals with the crucifixion of Christ and is great for Good Friday services. Section A exposes the hymn. The key then modulates with the aid of an augmented sixth chord (German 6th). Section B includes a descant by yours truly and ends on a Picardy third.
