As with many tunes from the early 20th century (c.1902) this one is the result of several inspirations. It uses the spiritual tune "Nobody Knows the trouble I've seen," to support a love story involving a soldier and a red cross nurse, which was later changed to a love story between two islanders on a tropical island. This led to it's being noticed by a broadway producer who bought it for inclusion in a musical entitled "Sally in our Alley."In it's era it sold an astonishing 400,000 copies of piano/vocal sheet music that found its way into the parlors of American homes throughout the United States . The song also appeared in the movie (Meet me in St. Louis). The arranger has also performed this tune as the main love song between Cinderella and the Prince in a recent adaptation of this classic story. In this piano solo version, the Chorus precedes one verse of the tune (text included). The verse is exactly twice as fast as the chorus and is marked in the score by the quarter= half note symbol above the staff in measure 20.
