Composed by Manoel Joaquim de Macedo. Arranged by Alexandre Dias (editor); Published by Instituto Piano Brasileiro - IPB. This edition: pdf. 19th Century, 20th Century, Latin, Multicultural, Romantic Period, World. Score. 10 pages. Instituto Piano Brasileiro - IPB #1187513. Published by Instituto Piano Brasileiro - IPB (A0.1618321).
This urtext edition of Un jour de Printemps (“A Day in Spring”) by Manoel Joaquim de Macedo (1845–1925) unveils a long-lost gem of Brazilian Romantic piano literature. A prominent composer and violinist, Macedo contributed significantly to Brazil’s musical scene—both for violin and piano—yet much of his large body of work remains unexplored. Un jour de Printemps, Op.159, comes to us from a rare Teodoro Goetze publication (circa 1908), dedicated to capturing the delicate lyricism and poetic expressiveness of a text excerpt by Victor Hugo.
Carefully derived from a scarce surviving print, this edition adheres to strict urtext principles restoring Macedo’s authentic musical intent. Complete with bilingual (Portuguese and English) prefatory notes, it provides valuable historical context and illuminates Macedo’s compositional style, bridging late-Romantic sensibilities with an emerging national consciousness in Brazilian music.
Key features of this edition include:
- Faithful reconstruction from an extremely rare original publication once thought lost. - Detailed editorial commentary highlighting necessary corrections based on Macedo’s original score. - Bilingual preface offering insight into the composer’s biography, the piece’s connection to Victor Hugo’s poetry, and Macedo’s pivotal role in Brazilian music history.
Un jour de Printemps is essential for pianists and scholars interested in discovering the breadth of Brazil’s Romantic-era repertoire. Its graceful melodies and refined textures bring to life a poetic springtime soundscape, solidifying Macedo’s legacy as an accomplished composer worthy of renewed attention.
