Ursprünglich wurde diese Motette zum Fest Mariä Heimsuchung komponiert. (Das Datum des Festes ist der 2. Juli, nach der wenig beachteten Verschiebung des Zweiten Vaticanums der 2. Juli.) Seit etwa zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wird es aber zumeist in der Adventzeit gesungen; ähnlich wie das Lied Maria durch ein Dornwald’ ging.
