Daniel Purcell (c. 1660 - Dec. 12, 1717) was organist at Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1688 until 1695, when he moved to London the year of the death of his illustrious brother, Henry. Adding a masque in the fifth act of the “Indian Queen", for which Henry Purcell had written the rest of the music, Daniel was soon in great demand to supply incidental music for plays.
His music for Thomas D’Urfey’s “Massaniello" (or “The Rise and Fall of Massaniello") was performed in 1699. Contemporaneous “sheet music" editions and published collections were quick to take advantage of currently popular tunes from theatrical productions, and Daniel Purcell’s songs for this drama were no exception.
