Prelude No. 1 captivates with its energetic, syncopated rhythms, which support an upbeat, joyful blues melody. Prelude No. 2 shifts to a slower, more lyrical mood, featuring a lullaby-like melody and highlighting the chromatic drive in the pianist’s left hand. The final prelude, No. 3, is a fast-paced, relentless ragtime that maintains its vigorous momentum through to the last downbeat.
This work has been reorchestrated and arranged numerous times since its release nearly a century ago. Continuing this tradition, Robert Smith, a doctoral candidate in trumpet performance at the University of Southern Mississippi's esteemed School of Music, crafted this arrangement for trumpet sextet. The scoring throughout showcases the versatility and virtuosity of the trumpet ensemble.
