Four-choir sacred concert. Composed by Heinrich Schutz. Edited by Paul Horn. Arranged by Paul Horn. This edition: urtext. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Schutz. German title: Es erhub sich ein Streit. Sacred vocal music, Special days. Individual part. Composed circa 1620. SWV Anh. 11. 2 pages. Carus Verlag #CV 20.711/24. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.2071124).
9 x 12 inches. Key: C major. Language: German/English.
The composition has survived anonymously in a manuscript set of parts from Kassel and was already included by Heinrich Spitta in the old Schütz Complete Edition (1927). Schütz remains conceivable as the composer, although this has since been contradicted in various ways. A special feature of the composition is the fourth chorus with a vocal tenor, a trumpet (Trombetta) and 3 bassoons. It is not only the combination of bassoons and trumpet that is unusual, but the use of the trumpet in a vocal-instrumental work in general. Schütz is one of the very few composers of his time who used the trumpet "musically" (not just as a signalling and ceremonial instrument) (SWV 275, 435, 453).
