Franz Schubert's song cycle Die schöne Müllerin was written in 1823 and based on poetry written by Wilhelm Müller. A collection of 20 poems, it tells of a young journeyman miller who falls in love with a miller's daughter, but she already taken with a green-clad hunter. The journeyman develops an obsession with the color green and death fantasies, and eventually drowns himself in the brook.
"Das Wandern" is the first movement from the song cycle. It's a joyful piece depicting the Journeyman wandering through the countryside. He comes upon a brook, and comments upon the perpetual motion of the brook, the millstones, the wheels, and even himself, portrayed by the consistent piano accompaniment. Here, composer and performer Danny Chapa has taken Schubert's theme and composed several variations in the style of Arban, Clark, and Pryer. It was premiered in 2017 at Stephen F. Austin State University.
Dr. Chapa holds degrees from Louisiana State University and from the University of North Texas and has held faculty positions at Stephen F. Austin State University and at Brookhaven College. He is an active performer and lecturer at concerts and conferences around the United States.
