The Western Playland for Baritone Voice by Ivor Gurney Baritone Voice - Sheet Music
Voice & Piano

SKU: ST.B501

Composed by Ivor Gurney. Vocal music. Originally for Piano and String Quartet, and later provided with piano accompaniment by the composer. Newly edited, with an introduction by Michael Pilkington. Vocal score. Stainer & Bell Ltd. #B501. Published by Stainer & Bell Ltd. (ST.B501).

ISBN 9790220207136.

Though issued in 1926 in the Carnegie Edition, in the same year as the full score of The Western Playland (and of Sorrow) (Ref: 35601), Ivor Gurney’s transcription of the work for baritone and piano diverged significantly from its source, presaging the composer’s problematical afterthoughts and revisions, chiefly to the accompaniment, only recently resolved in Philip Lancaster’s performing edition Ref: Y352. Michael Pilkington’s 1982 edition revisited Gurney’s transcription, adding Textural Notes that clarify the differences between the two publications of 1926, and which allow the singer no difficulty in adapting from the vocal score to the original full score.

Recorded by Graham Trew on Meridian CDE 84185 and by Adrian Thompson on Hyperion Helios CDH55187
