This is a travelling folk-song and no mistake; it has many titles: Waly Waly (Wail, Wail), There is a Ship, Cockleshells - which use and re-use different selections of lyrics. It has been sung in different forms for hundreds of years: there are ancestors dating back to the sixteenth century. There's an Irish version, a Scots version, a Welsh version. I always believed it to be from the north of England - it was a surprise to learn that Cecil Sharp collected it from the southern county of Somerset (1906). The modern "The Water is Wide" was popularised by Pete Seeger in his folk song revival (1958) whereupon it became an American folk-song too. Such a sad song ... love doesn't last! These harmonies are straightforward, an easy learn. The 2nd Sops have the melody, the Altos a gentle harmony. The 1st Sops have two descants, moments of glory for them ... if your choir has Sops that love to soar up to G and can sustain it, then in the final chord all parts sing their top note of the chord. If not, sing the lower note. I've not written in any dynamic markings; it's a folk-song - have fun with interpretation!
