Patented in 1928 by Russian/Soviet television and surveillance researcher Leon Theremin, the instrument named for him is one of the world’s oldest electronic musical instruments. As a performer, the Thereminist pays some prices. They do not touch their instrument when playing, they cannot operate the device with people in range of the sensors (there are no Theremin sections in symphony orchestras), and compared to other instruments there are few teachers. Learning to play a Theremin is a lonely experience. The Theremin Play-Along Book is a collection of twenty-eight imaginary parts for classical compositions that allow the Thereminist to solo along with existing recordings, integrate into a Western orchestral or chamber concert, or hone playing and listening skills by singing in an online shower.
