Rhythmic and angular best describe the piece The Mask from string educator and composer David Hinds. David draws from his years of experience to write music that students will love to play and practice. All sections of the orchestra get a chance to shine with some of the melodic material.
Written in E minor, The Mask has a very mysterious quality to it. But as the title suggests, it presents a question of the unknown, adding a unique energy to the piece. The two eighth notes prior to quarter and eighth rests help to set the short style of the two Allegro sections. (Make note to keep eighth notes on the string.) The Meno mosso at m. 23 helps to emphasize the melodic quality since the key remains in E minor. Then, after a brief eight measures of G major, the piece returns to E minor. Be sure to emphasize the ritardando before returning to the Tempo I at m. 47.Observation of dynamics is necessary in the Allegro especially in the last three measures to give it a good, final farewell. Not only will your students enjoy this music, but it would also be a great contest selection.
