The search for an adequate gift for the newborn Savior has been explored many times in Christmas carols and anthems. In The Gift, the tension between our lack as finite, sinful humans and Christ's abundance as Lord of creation is evident in the imagery found in Pamela Martin's words, filled with vivid images of the endless treasures already in the tiny baby's possession. The chasm between our lack and His abundance is finally bridged near the end of the anthem: the one thing that we do possess is the choice to offer our hearts to Him.
