Composed by Samantha Muir. Score. Les Productions d'OZ #DZ 3420. Published by Les Productions d'OZ (DZ.DZ-3420).
ISBN 9782897953379.
There are many ukulele methods on the market but this is the first method dedicated to classical ukulele and campanela style playing. This Method is suitable for self-learning or may be used with the guidance of a qualified and experienced teacher. The student with no prior musical knowledge or knowledge of the ukulele can use this Method as a platform for learning. Topics covered include how to read staff notation and tab, how to fingerpick, and how to understand basic rhythms and musical signs and symbols. Many exercises are offered as well as twenty three repertoire pieces ranging from Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star to Ecossaise by Carulli. The Method begins with simple melodies and progresses to playing arpeggios, playing chord melody arrangements and an introduction to playing in campanela style. At the back of the book there is an extra ma- terial section which includes scale patterns, a table of note values, a note locator on the fingerboard, practise records, a key signature guide and relative major and minor chords. The intention of this book is to give the student a comprehensive grounding in classical ukulele technique and repertoire. Two systems of notation are used and the student is encouraged to learn both. Tab is more immediate and enthusiastic students may be tempted, in their desire to move on, to only use the tab. But I urge them to dedicate time to learning the staff notation. Learning is not a race and being able to read staff notation will take time, practise and patience. The aim is not to get to the end the book, the aim is to understand all of the technical and musical requirements met along the way. Progress is not determined by moving in a straight line from the beginning to the end. For if you reach the end and can’t remember what you learnt in the first lesson then what progress have you made?
