♫ The purpose of this collection is to look closely at the I Am’s of the Gospel of John. The individual titles have been composed over many years in various ensemble types. The songs have been added to, reworked, expanded, and made consistent in this publication for SATB choir with piano. A narration has been added to unify the themes of the songs. Of course, each of these songs can be performed separately as stand-alone choral works.
♫ This song is not based on an “I Am” statement but refers to Apostle John’s opening portrait of Christ.
♫ These claims of Jesus Christ are very much like a series of portraits of a person. Instead of calling “The Claims of the Son” a cantata, the composer chose the term “polyptych” [pu LIP tich]. A polyptych is a work of art consisting of 4 or more pieces or panels, that together create a single presentation. [A diptych is divided into 2 sections, a triptych into 3 sections etc.]
