Composed by Edward Elgar. Cantata, Secular, Transcriptions, Original Works, Choral. Reprint Source: London: Novello & Co., 1897. Plate 8256. Post-Romantic, English. Vocal score. Composed 1897. 58 pages. Petrucci Library Press #10173. Published by Petrucci Library Press (SA.10173).
ISBN 9781484964781. 6.69 x 9.61 inches.
Following the success of his two choral works from the previous year (The Light of Life and King Olaf), Elgar's publisher Novello commissioned a cantata in honor of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee to an appropriately patriotic text by Henry Shapcott Bunce (1854-1917) using the pseudonym Shapcott Wensley. The premiere took place in London on May 18, 1897 with the St. Cuthbert's Hall Choral Society under the baton of Cyril Miller. The 30-minute cantata is still performed from time to time even today thanks to the power of Elgar's unique and very characteristic music. The present vocal score is an enhanced facsimile of the original Novello edition, with added measure numbers and scaled to a larger, more readable format. Unlike so many of the on-demand scores now available, this one comes with all the pages and the images have been thoroughly checked to make sure it is readable. The score is beautifully printed on off-white stock with a quality cover. As with all PLP scores a percentage of each sale is donated to the amazing online archive of free music scores and recordings, IMSLP - Petrucci Music Library.
