Composed by George Frideric Handel. Arranged by Phil Thwaite. This edition: audio, pdf. Baroque. Guitar Tab. 7 pages. Phil Thwaite #4309193. Published by Phil Thwaite (A0.916741).
This is a Solo Guitar arrangement of The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba. It has been arranged in A Major, which lends itself to being far more idiomatic to play on the Guitar. A Major is a good fit and sits well on this instrument. It facilitates more freedom of movement in position changes due to the open strings available, amongst other things.
This arrangement comes from a deeply personal love of this piece from a childhood memory. I never thought I would arrange it for Guitar until I was asked to do so for a wedding some years ago. I have tried to remain as authentic to the original as possible and have tailored passages to be realistic about technical facility on the Guitar as well as working within the limitations of the instrument.
This piece lasts for approximately 4-5 minutes, depending on tempo.
I have outlined the way I approached the piece as a whole by arranging it in sections marked by thin double bars. I also used these as a guideline to practice, working on individual sections before trying to link them together. Perhaps the hardest part of this arrangement is in bars 49-58. This is partly due to modulation and being in the lower register on the instrument. Fingerings are difficult and should be given much thought and practice to negotiate your way through smoothly.
Special attention should also be given to the bars marked 'Campanella' which need to be played with two adjacent strings held simultaneously. This has been done deliberately and I think gives a superior sound to playing pairs of notes one after the other on the same string. It provides a far more lucid feel to these sections.
Tablature has been edited carefully and is there to help clarify the specific positions recommended for playing in. Whilst this information can be added to standard notation, I also wanted it to be accessible to as many as possible.
