TERSICHORE, was a collection of dances by Michael Praetorius published in 1612. It is the quintessential early music "gig book." In Robert Fruehwald's piece for solo clarinet, three of the dances are combined into a quodlibet. Each dance retains all of its original pitches, but each has been rerhythmicized so that all three will fit together. Each dance is played in a different register of the instrument. The first dance to appear is a Bransle Gay, followed by a bouree and a volte. The bransle is in G minor while the other two dances are in G major. This juxtaposition of the major and minor modes gives the piece a kind of "bluesy" sound.
