In association with the world-famous Arp Schnitger organ in Ludingworth , fragments of organ tablature with music from the period around 1550/70 have been rediscovered. These fragments, have been published for the first time in a high-quality facsimile edition. They contain the earliest Lutheran organ music and at the same time, make available the precursors of 17th century North German organ music. The edition includes the earliest known organ chorale by a Lutheran organist and documents the earliest available sources of new German organ tablature. For a period in which very few sources of keyboard music survive at all, this is the sole document containing central European repertoire. And finally, it offers information of inestimable importance for North German organ music. The facsimile, together with a transcription in modern notation, are complemented by an extensive commentary which also describes the historical context of the source and the music it contains.
The editor Konrad Kuster (*1959) is Professor of Historical Musicology at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau ; numerous book publications. He has specialised in the areas of Protestant musical culture: Heinrich Schutz , Johann Sebastian Bach (Bach- Handbuch , Barenreiter 1999) and the traditions of North German organ culture.
