Symphony o.1 in E flat major was my first attempt in large musical forms.

The history of the piece can be traced to my first attempts in composing when I was
14 years old. I tried to compose a symphony without any consciousness in
counterpoint, harmony or instrumentation. The result was a strange potpourri of
melodies. Back then I was proud of my work and sent the work to my music teacher,
in the hope that the school orchestra would perform it. The pride subsided, however,
after I received a scathing criticism from the piano teacher of one of my classmates.
After that I always found chances to rewrite the work, eventually taking up the task in
late 2008. The freedom of time after my certificate exams allowed me to concentrate
in working with the symphony. The final version of the symphony, completed in
October 2009, is much more decent in musicality, and with contrast and depth.

The first movement is in sonata form, and is loosely modelled on Dvorak’s Symphony
No.8. The primary and secondary themes have a pastoral feeling. The development
shows power and might and provides contrast against the rest of the movement. The
second movement is in tertiary form, with the main theme adapted from a vocal work
which I never finished. The middle portion is a lively dance. The third movement is a
light scherzo. The fourth movement is a rondo which returns to the pastoral mood of
the first movement, and the entire symphony ends in triumph.
