Dieser von Robert Schumann 1840 geausserte Satz verweist auf die grosse Bedeutung, die Bach fur Schumann gehabt hat und die die Ursache fur seine intensive Beschaftigung mit dessen Werk darstellt; Abschriften, Herausgaben und Bearbeitungen zeugen davon. Im Jahr 1853, nach der Bearbeitung der Bachscheu Violinsonaten fur Violine und Klavier schrieb Schumann auch zu den Sonaten fur Violoncello einen Klavierpart. Diese Bearbeitungen blieben jedoch im Gegensatz zu denen der Violinsonaten bisher ungedruckt. Unser Erstdruck der Suite Nr. III basiert auf einer Abschrift des verschollenen Autographs, die Joachim Draheim entdeckte. Schumann wollte mit seiner Bearbeitung die musikalischen Qualitaten des Originals ins rechte Licht rucken. Sie ist nicht als Eingriff in das Werk oder als Stilbruch zu verstehen. So ist die Klavierbegleitung sehr dezent, als ,,harmonisches Trageband" anzusehen. Ein ausfuhrliches Vorwort und ein Revisionsbericht von Joachim Draheim liefern wichtige Informationen zum Verstandnis des Werkes.
