Program Notes:

Composed in 2024, String Quintet No. 1 by Evan Widjaja represents a fresh addition to the contemporary chamber music repertoire. Drawing inspiration from the genre of game music, the piece explores the expressive and rhythmic potential of a string quintet using an unconventional instrumentation—two violins, viola, cello, and double bass—rather than the more common two-viola or two-cello configurations. This distinctive setup extends the ensemble’s sonic range and contributes to the work’s weightier lower textures.

The piece is marked by a rhythmic vitality that emerges from its use of asymmetrical meters, notably 10/8, interspersed with frequent metric shifts. These irregular time signatures create a constantly evolving pulse, imbuing the music with a sense of forward motion and spontaneity. Despite the rhythmic complexity, the piece maintains a clear structural cohesion, with transitions that feel intuitive rather than abrupt.

Widjaja makes effective use of textural contrast through varying accompaniment styles and carefully placed accents. These elements support a dynamic interplay between the upper and lower strings, requiring precision and strong ensemble coordination. Microtones are used as an expressive device, adding a layer of harmonic nuance and contributing to the piece’s distinctive contemporary voice. Particularly striking are the glissandi and portamenti, used to transition between pitches with dramatic intensity, and the dynamic shaping, where crescendos not only involve an increase in volume but also an increase in dramatic energy, creating a sense of synergy between performers.

For the performers, the piece demands both technical precision and a keen sense of expressive timing. Glissandi (particularly in the lower strings) serve as energetic transitions, propelling the music forward with intensity, while microtonal swells add a unique edge to the harmonic landscape. These elements, paired with the aggressive and percussive character of the cello and double bass, help to establish the piece’s gritty, visceral quality. Throughout, accents should be exaggerated for a bold impact, and staccato notes must be played with crispness to achieve a percussive, rhythmic clarity.

The first violin plays with confidence and flair, especially in moments of prominence, but blends seamlessly when supporting the other instruments. The second violin mirrors the first in both tone and character, ensuring that unison passages achieve maximum grandeur. The viola provides strong support in the ensemble, offering a rich midrange, while also serving as a soloistic voice with its expressive counter-melodic lines.

In the double bass, the glissandi are particularly impactful—emphasising a driving downward motion that adds weight and intensity to the transitions. The bass lines serve as the foundational anchor of the ensemble, while also contributing to the texture with a gritty, percussive quality.

Premiered at the Victorian College of the Arts Composition Concert in 2024, String Quintet No. 1 was awarded the 2024 David Henkels Composition Award. It stands as a compact yet inventive exploration of rhythm, texture, and timbral colour, offering a compelling snapshot of Widjaja’s developing compositional voice. The piece invites the listener to focus on the interplay of complex rhythms, evolving textures, and the unique sounds of the string quintet, creating an engaging and immersive musical experience.
