“The Eternal Reciprocity of Tears” – String Quartet No. 2 Shane Woodborne’s String Quartet No. 2, composed in 2018, is inspired by the centenary of Armistice Day and the poignant war poetry of Wilfred Owen. Titled after the closing line of Owen’s poem Insensibility, the quartet serves as both a reflection on the horrors of World War I and a personal requiem for the composer’s great-grandfather, who died from injuries sustained in the war.
The quartet’s four movements draw from Owen’s poetry, portraying the emotional landscapes of war. Anchored in classical form yet integrating modern harmonic techniques, the work highlights the humanity conveyed in Owen’s "Poetry of Compassion." This composition serves as a musical tribute to the impact of war and the shared experience of grief.
The movements of this work correspond to Owen's poems as follows:
I. The Send-Off (04/1918) II. Strange Meeting (11/1917) III. The Next War (09/1917) IV Insensibility (10/1917).
