Ondrej Kukal (born 1964) is a successful Czech violinist, composer and conductor. The single-movement String Quartet Op. 9 was composed in 1988, winning an award in the composition contest Generace the following year. The work was written under the impression of the composer's encounter with Josef Vlach in the inspirational environment of the New Vlach Quartet, which also premiered the work in 1991.
