1991 saw the final big screen outing of the original Star Trek crew. Following the critical and commercial disappointment of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, director Nicholas Meyer, who also directed Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, returned to the franchise and set out to tell a more complex and tonally dark story than any previous instalment.
Thanks in part to the previous movie’s box office performance, the limited budget available for music led Meyer to consider using Gustav Holst’s The Planets suite to score the movie, but the extraordinary cost of licensing that work and adapting it to fit the picture ruled it out as a viable option. After listening to several demo tapes, young and upcoming composer Cliff Eidelman was selected to write the new score, and the resulting soundtrack remains a uniquely dark and melodramatic powerhouse.
Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. An opportunity not to be missed!
