A local junior high string orchestra teacher asked me to provide a flexible string orchestra version of the Star Spangled Banner. The four parts of the melody and harmony are assigned as: Melody/Soprano (A), Upper Harmony/Alto (B), Lower Harmony/Tenor (C), and Bass (D). By mixing and matching the instruments, this allows performance by a violin quartet, a viola quartet, a cello quartet, even a bass quartet(!), or any combination of instruments as long as the parts A, B, C, and D are present and balanced. The key of G was chosen as it is still singable (although somewhat low) but had a key signature that wasn't too challenging for the less-experienced students in her class of mixed-abilities.
