About “Light and Grace” (Sòng Guāng Hé Xī)
Light and Grace is a poetic hymn, written for the soul’s quiet journey from sorrow into hope, from night into dawn. It celebrates the moment when divine love gently awakens the heart, and peace returns like morning light on still waters.
A distinctive feature of this piece is its deliberate avoidance of conventional religious terms like “Alleluia” and “Amen.” Instead, it employs poetic imagery rooted in Chinese cultural expression. The phrase “颂光和熙” (sòng guāng hé xī) replaces Alleluia and “愿和” replaces Amen, offering spiritual meaning without theological jargon.
This creative choice arose from the author's reflection on how religious vocabulary can sometimes create distance for Chinese-speaking audiences unfamiliar with or sensitive to such language.
In this reimagining, “Light” represents divine revelation, and “Grace” (和熙) evokes warmth and gentleness—like sunlight on a face, or a breeze after rain. “Sòng” means to praise, while “hé xī” suggests harmonious radiance. “愿和” conveys both a desire for union with Christ (愿) and a state of reconciliation and harmony (和).
This approach draws inspiration from the author's study of early Chinese Christian texts—especially the Nestorian Stele from the Tang dynasty and Song-era translations—which similarly used symbolic language to bridge faith and culture. Light and Grace is a continuation of that tradition: to offer praise not by preaching, but by singing beauty and hope into the heart.
