Manuel Sánchez García was born in Campillo de Ranas, Guadalajara, on March 27, 1771 and
died in Madrid on July 8, 1825. He was a bassoonist for the Royal Chapel from 1814, having
previously been a bassoonist for the Royal Monastery of La Encarnación in Madrid.
The Sonatina for bassoon is a work composed for the bassoon opposition of the Royal Chapel
in 1819. On the cover is "Sonatina de Baxon/Compuesta por Dn. Manuel Sanchez
Garcia/primer bajonista de la real Capilla de/S.M.C./para la Oposicion del Año 1819./siendo
Maestro de dha Rl. Ca.Dn. Jose Lidon".
The original manuscript is composed to be performed with the accompaniment of
unencrypted continuous bass. The author has opted for the option of making a harmonized
accompaniment to facilitate its interpretation and dissemination. In this way, it can be
interpreted as a duet (with bassoon or cello accompaniment) or as a sonata (with piano or
harpsichord accompaniment).
It presents a moderate technical difficulty, and shows a musical and aesthetic interest similar
to the European of its time.
