The sonata is in two movements: Andante con affetto and Ballad. The first movement is in sonata form, written in a neo-romantic style and contrasts the different registers of the clarinet: the rich and beautiful chalumeau register in the first theme, with grim and melancholic character, and the more brilliant higher notes of the clarinet in the second theme, flowing and operatic. The theme on the second movement is meant to entice the imagination of the listener with the image of a minstrel telling of a journey made a long time ago, entertaining the audience with the variations that unfold, only to return with the opening melody back in the end, as if teaching the morals of the story.
