By Richard St. Clair. Composed by Richard St. Clair. Arranged by Richard St. Clair. This edition: pdf. 20th Century, 21st Century, Christian, Classical, Religious. Individual part. 38 pages. Richard St. Clair #1379012. Published by Richard St. Clair (A0.1818889).This brilliant concert piece will turn heads. It is in St. Clair's signature free tonality style in which tonal and nontonal elements are used to create a gripping narrative based upon John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, an allegory of how the believer comes through tests and perils to be with God in heaven. Starting with discords symbolizing sin and death, the work gradually introduces more and more tonal elements, symbolizing the goal, direct experience of God. Finally the work ends in a tonal way, but with strong textural and harmonic complexity summing up the Christian's final ultimate realization.
Almost as interesting in this work is St. Clair's use, as a kind of musical motto or recurring motif, the opening three notes of J. S. Bach's great Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The figure recurs throughout, providing a substratum of compositional unity.
A favorite book almost as popular as the Bible itself, it forms the inner expressive content of this new musical composition.
The score is in both French and English.
