Gruber and his parish priest (and lyricist Josef Mohr) performed the premiere at Christmas Mass 1818. The organ had broken down, so Gruber (the local choirmaster and school teacher) wrote this for guitar and played and sang with Father Mohr at mass. This violin duet with piano can be performed with choir or without. It would be perfect as an offertory during the Christmas season, or at midnight mass. The performance level is intermediate for both violins and piano. Three verses are included but, of course, feel free to repeat as necessary. Text is contained for unison singing.
