Originally a spiritual written in the 1800s, this song was called When the Chariot Comes; however, over time, the lyrics changed to those we know today and was first published in a book of American folk songs by Carl Sandburg in 1927. I have tried to write a Tenor/Baritone with optional second Baritone, that will easily fit those voices. The hand-claps written in the music give the song a fun, folk-song feel (you may want to add some foot stomps as well). In addition, feel free to add percussion, guitar, fiddle, or anything you think would capture the American folk song style. I hope you enjoy singing this great American Folk Song!
