Seven Variations on Barbara Allen's Cruelty
for recorder quartet (s/a/t/b).
The alto and bass parts both have solos.

The folk tune Barbara Allen is a traditional Scottish Ballad (Child Ballad 84) which later became a popular folk song. The ethnomusicologists Steve Roud and Julia Bishop described it as “far and away the most widely collected song in the English language – equally popular in England, Scotland and Ireland, and with hundreds of versions collected over the years in North America.” (Roud, Steve and Julia Bishop [2012] The New Penguin Book of Folk Songs. Penguin. pp. 406-7).
The title Barbara Allen’s Cruelty first appears in a broadside of the song from 1690. The song was taken to America by the first British immigrants. In 1910 Cecil Sharp, the folk song collector, travelled through America’s southern states and there he found many English ballads that had been forgotten in his native land. He collected enough versions of “Barbara Allen” to fill sixteen pages of his book English Folk Songs of the Southern Appalachians.
