Imagine sailing on the ocean with a gentle breeze, calm waves and a beautiful sky.Sailing Along tries to accomplish this peaceful feeling using half notes, quarter notes and eighth notes with dynamic markings of f, mf and p.  There are two accents (tutti) on the last two notes.  Percussion used is SD, BD, cymbals and xylophone (opt.).  Also introduces students to multi-measure rests.  Clarinet 1 and bass clarinet will cross the break to D along with trumpet 1 to D.  Also comes with a baritone TC part.  Rehearsal suggestions-First. I would work on the concert Bb scale, tutti, by sections, etc., with several different dynamic contrasts (p, mf, f).  Try using hand directions for piano, mezzo-forte and forte.  Also play the last 2 notes, tutti to practice the accents.  Explaining/ demonstrate accents would be very helpful.  From m.17 to  m. 24 watch the unison rhythms. (Clapping rhythms always helps.)  Be aware of the short canon at m. 25 (explain). After listening to all types of music while growing up, I began my arranging ‘career’ in high school trying to put my own personal “spin” on songs sometimes to the chagrin of my band director!  I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and received my BME at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, IL.  After graduation, I moved to Tampa, FL, where I taught strings, band,  chorus and general music for 35 years.  During this time, I did arranging for my own school groups, local amateur groups, all-county school orchestras as well as professional musicians and orchestras. I usually write for 3-part band and 3-part string orchestra  grade .5/ 1 pieces and am currently enjoying “retirement” .I hope that your group has as much fun performing “Sailing Along” as I did composing it.
