Hefti took whole passages from his oboe concerto out of their context and formed them anew, as if "rotated", hence the title of this work. "These combinations result in a colorful mosaic that allows the original motives to appear in a new light. In these Rotations, the oboe contrasts brief phrases played in a single breath (and thus of a 'natural' length) with 'overlong' passages that can only be played with circular breathing. A field of tension thus results between passages that are felt as organic, and melodies that seem almost unending."--David Hefti (from the program notes)
