This has to be one of my all-time fav Elton John songs. Apart from the obvious space theme, I think it’s about anyone who feels alone, cut off from loved ones, or one who carries unexpressed thoughts or feelings. I wanted the verses to sound ‘Star Trek-y’ using the women to ‘Ah’ Oo’ and ‘Wah’ above the guys (Tenors and Basses) who will sing the melody (more so the tenors).
In the choruses however, everyone gets to sing the words monophonically bringing variation of texture between the verses and choruses. The ending follows the Elton original by being repeated 7 times! This will be so dramatic and emotional for your singers and audience alike (and great technique needed) as the choir sing each line quieter than the line before as they disappear into the universe…
This is an arrangement written for SSATB+piano - which means the harmonies will sound rich, lush and full. It is not a difficult piece to learn so long as you have enough singers where there are more women than men!
